BallTools

BallTools is a Max/MSP based audio recording application. It’s something I whipped up for my girlfriend because she has an iMic and no access to ProTools but then we found something called FinalVinyl which worked just as well so BallTools is being offered to you, dear public with the addition of the capability for inserting a VST plug-in such as my Pluggos on the input stream. Even FinalVinyl can’t do that.
These are the benefits of BallTools:
BallTools is free! All you need is my patch and Max/MSP 4.5.2 runtime for Mac OSX which you can download for free here. You can of course run it with the commercial version also.
BallTools is good for recording from minidisc, phonograph, cassette, or voice. It takes advantage of the built-in Macintosh audio system so you don’t need any external interfaces. With the addition of the free Soundflower application from Cycling’74, you can even record from any other audio application, such as iTunes.
You can easily crop files or remove silence from the beginning or end.
You can add a VST plug-in to the input stream.
You can save your files in many formats, including Wav, Aiff, Next and Sound Designer II among others.
Built-in “Smart Keyboard” that responds to the press and release of the mouse button.
Read-out of continuous controllers 1-127, pitch bend, mod wheel, pitch and velocity as well as input of these parameters. Fully Midi compatible.
With the addition of Max/MSP, you can add your own modules to it, or take some away.
These are the drawbacks of BallTools:
It can be difficult to navigate since I made it rather fast and didn’t put so much work into interface bells and whistles.
You can’t really edit your sound file much beyond simple cropping.
