MaxScore was originally designed to demonstrate algorithmic thinking in computer music. It is loosely based upon Barry Truax’s POD systems of the 1980s.

MaxScore follows the POD design of events contained within notelists (scores). This convention is also used by many other computer music programs, including Csound and MIDI sequencers. This version of MaxScore is limited to the creation of two operator (classic) FM, or, in terms of Csound, ten p-fields (the standard five of instrument, time, duration, amplitude, and frequency, with five additional p-fields assigned to carrier ratio, modulator ratio, modulation index, carrier envelope number, and modulator envelope number).

Scores can be created, auditioned (with default envelopes), and converted into Csound scorefiles. Saving a score saves it as a file compatible only with MaxScore itself.

Note that instruments and envelopes are *not* created in this program – they must be defined in the Csound scorefile independently.
